Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The typical question that is asked when buying a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: do I buy an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, an acronym for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, an acronym for ‘digital light processing’ are the two commonplace projector imaging technologies. With so many different brands and models available, it can be difficult for consumers to pick between the two technologies. The simple fact of the matter is that LCD projectors have better image quality and colour accuracy. The article below tells you why DLP projectors struggle with reproducing a comparable rate of image quality.

A point to understad about LCD projectors is that all three colours are sent onto your screen all at once. The way a DLP projector works is totally different and even the produced image shows up is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is sent through a turning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This approach to creating an image forms a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors described above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to form the image elements. The elements of the image are cast in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eye will then put together each coloured element of the image into a single total image. From LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to form high brightness and fantastic colour accuracy. In DLP, only one colour is available at any given time, and so causing lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some developers have added a white segment into the colour wheel to improve general brightness, but this goes and damages colour accuracy.

I hear in forums all the time that DLP provides a higher contrast ratio and ergo must be better. For those who don’t know, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the projector is capable of. DLP projectors do possess high contrast specifications when compared to a majority of LCD projectors. At a glance, this seems to be a plus, however, in truth, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room while the projector is utilised. When the content you plan to project needs moving images, DLP projection technology can also have image imperfections, or ‘artifacts’. Another point of difference between LCD and DLP is how they balance for the refractive qualities of light. Remember back to high school science, and remember how the different colours of light refract various amounts when directed through the same lens. The disadvantage with DLP projectors is that they take the one same panel for the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are different and refract light in a different way. Usually with a DLP projector, some extra yellow colour will come through above and an extra blue will come through below something as simple as a single black line. In building LCD projectors can be set to remove these effects on the projected image, because each colour is refracted on a separate LCD panels.

The only real advantage (excluding price) with choosing a DLP projector is its smaller total size and weight. However, this is only relevant for transporting the device and needs to be traded off against the image benefits of LCD projectors. Yacht racing was incidental, borne from private challenges. English yachting originated with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his reaffirmation to the English royalty in 1660, the city of Amsterdam presented him with a 20-metre (66-foot) leisure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he then named Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, ruled 1685–88), built more yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and the same way back, on a £100 bet. Yachting became classy for the affluent and aristocracy, but after that period the fashion did not last.

The first yacht group in the British Isles, the Water Club, was formed around about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard group, and had great naval panoply and rigour. The closest thing to racing boats was the “chase,” in which the “fleet” pursued an imagined enemy. The club persisted, for the large part as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, by merging with other societies, it became known as the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing began in some ordered fashion on the Thames around the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland founded the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV ascended to monarchy in 1820, it was then known as the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded following a racing fight, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht club had been formed at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal patronage made the Solent - the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight - the perpetual setting of British yacht racing. The association at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, also at the accession of George IV. All members were required to have boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing matches for great bets were held, and the society life was lovely. It came to be that the Royal Yachting Club boats increased in size to bigger than 350 tons.

In North America, yachting began with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and went on when the English had dominance. Sailing was for the most part for fun and rose to its high point in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which cruised on the Mediterranean Sea and established a minimum of luxury and elegance for the later yachts in the area from the late 19th century. The first continuing American yacht organisation, the Detroit Boat Club, was started in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens founded the New York Yacht Club while aboard his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
Early sailing yachts were within the style of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through the later half of the 19th century. The style of sizeable yachts was first heavily impacted by the success of America, which was drawn by George Steers for a club headed by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) found its namesake after its victory at Cowes in 1851. Early yachts were not designed and manufactured in a contemporary sense, with just a model for an outline. Not until the second half of the 19th century did what was called naval architecture come about. Not until the 1920s did the use of the study of aerodynamics do for the craft of sails and rigging what it had previously done for hulls.

Because almost all sailboats had been individually custom-built, there arose a desire for handicapping boats as this was before the one-design class boats were designed. Therefore, a rating rule was decreed, which ended up in the International Rule, taken on in 1906 and amended in 1919. In the present day, one of the most rapidly blossoming areas in the field of sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are manufactured to standard dimensions in length, beam, sail area, and other elements (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing for those boats can be had on an even playing field with no handicapping necessary. A perfect example is the generic International America’s Cup Class taken on board for racers in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

For the time that yachting belonged largely for the aristocracy and the wealthy, expense was no issue, and the size of boats developed, in both length and weight. The ascendancy and popularity of smaller yachts came in the latter half of the 19th century in the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A journey around the world (1895–98) captained single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray demonstrated the value of small boats. Following this in the 20th century, particularly after World War II, smaller racing and recreational craft became commonplace, down to the dinghy, a preferred training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, yachts of less than 3 m were traveled in single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
Following the decade 1840–50, when steam began to emulate sail power in commercial vessels, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were favoured increasingly in personal boats. Large power yachts were progressed to a high element, and long-distance cruising turned into a favourite pastime of the wealthy. The early power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; those then gave rise to boats powered by the completely submerged screw or propeller kind of propulsion. Like naval and merchant vessels, auxiliaries possessing both sail and power were the yacht archetype for a number of years. By the later half of the 20th century, a lot of yachts were still auxiliaries, but the majority were only power yachts with gasoline or diesel engines.

During the last decade of the 19th century there was a rise in the design of more sizeable steam yachts. Conspicuous of these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, with triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was manned by a crew of at least 150. The Mayflower, commissioned by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and gave active service in World War II.

As bigger and more reliable internal-combustion engines were created, many big boats started using them for power. The creation of the diesel engine, with heavy oil for fuel, progressed for World War I. From the decade following, big power-yacht manufacture flourished, reaching a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. During that time the best auxiliary yacht constructed was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The manufacture of big power yachts fell away in 1932, and the fashion from then was toward smaller, less pricey craft. After World War II, many small naval vessels were traded by private owners for conversion to yachts. At the late 20th century, yachting is a globally popular sport enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen personally sailing and maintaining their own small pleasure yachts. The popularity of yachts and owners is increasing steadily, not only in the traditional areas on the sea but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes can be categorized by the effect they have on the placement of income and wealth. A proportional tax is the kind that applies the same relative onus on all the taxpayers—i.e., in the case where tax liability and income grow in equal proportion. A progressive tax is recognised by a higher than proportional rise in the tax onus relative to the growth in income, and a regressive tax is recognisable by a less than proportional rise in the related onus. Thus, progressive taxes are seen as reducing a lack of equality in income distribution, whereas regressive taxes can have the effect of increasing these inequalities.

The taxes that are often regarded as progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are initially progressive, however, may become less so within the upper-income categories—particularly if a taxpayer is able to lessen his tax base by claiming deductions or by taking certain income elements from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates if applied to lower-income classes could also be more progressive if exemptions of a personal nature are made.

Income measured over the period of a given year may not absolutely come up with the most suitable measure of taxpaying requirement. For example, transitory increases in income might be saved, and within temporary declines in income a taxpayer could choose to pay for consumption by taking from savings. So, if taxation is compared alongside “permanent income,” it should be less regressive (or more progressive) than when held in comparison with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (except those on luxuries) are generally regressive, because the portion of personal income consumed or spent for specific goods lowers as the amount of personal income is raised. Poll taxes (also called head taxes), calculated as a fixed amount per capita, patently are regressive.

It is not easy to classify corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, principally due to a lack of certainty regarding the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of determining who bears the tax burden is dependant for the most part on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being considered.

In analysing the economic effect of taxation, it is essential to differentiate between several points of tax rates. The statutory rates include those dictated in law; generally speaking these are marginal rates, but sometimes they are mean rates. Marginal income tax rates note the fraction of incremental income taken by taxation when income rises by one dollar. Ergo, if tax liability increases by 45 cents when income grows by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax legislation generally contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that rise as income increases. Heavy analysis of marginal tax rates should regard provisions apart from the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) reduces by 20 cents for each one-dollar growth in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points higher than indicated within the statutory rates. Since marginal rates specify how after-tax income is changed in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the necessary ones for considering incentive effects of taxation. It is even more difficult to understand the marginal effective tax rate to apply to income from business and capital, because it may rely on factors such as the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem grants that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nothing under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates indicate the fraction of total income that is required in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is important for judging the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate increases with income. Average income tax rates commonly rise with income, both because personal allowances are granted for the taxpayer and dependents and also because marginal tax rates are graduated; on the other hand, preferential treatment of income received fundamentally by high-income households could dampen these effects, producing regressivity, as shown by average tax rates that lower as income increases.
